New England winters are hard enough — freezing temperatures, snow, sleet, ice, and frigid wind. But there’s truly no better place for winter activities and sports, like sledding, ice skating, snowboarding, and skiing. There are so many incredible ski and snowboarding resorts in the area that choosing where to spend your holiday or weekend can be dizzying — luckily for you, we pulled together the best of the best!

The town of Stowe, Vermont is at the top of our list. Famous for its small-town charm and internationally acclaimed ski slopes, Stowe also has a vibrant local culinary scene, and a huge host of other activities — from cuddling hot chocolate in local lodges, to visiting the Trapp Family Lodge. It’s a four-hour drive from Boston, which, yes, is hardly around the corner, but look at it this way: four hours to a snowy winter wonderland.

Next up: Jackson, New Hampshire. Even the road into Jackson is beautiful: the 1876 “honeymoon” bridge sets the mood for visitors instantly. Jackson not only has beautiful slopes, but is also famous for its cross-country skiing, and incredibly quaint local institutions such as the Wildcat Tavern, the Shannon Door Pub, The Shovel Handle, and more. You’ll find a buzzing local après-ski scene with skiiers of all ages. The driving distance from Boston to Jackson sits just under three hours, making it ideal for a weekend getaway.

Woodstock, Vermont is another gorgeous New England retreat only two and a half hours from Boston. While it isn’t home to slopes, it’s just a few minutes drive to the historic Suicide Six ski slopes, and mere a 20-mile drive to Killington, Vermont. You should make Woodstock your home for the trip, because it’s filled with beautiful parks, cozy local shops, historic architecture, and the charming, must-see 1969 Woodstock Inn.
