The other week, we told you about the best walks within an hour of Boston, but for those looking to adventure a bit further out, or who are looking for some much-needed fresh air and exercise, we have a new guide. New England is known for many things: beautifully crisp autumn weather, majestic landscapes, and iconic fall foliage — and you can get all three within an hour. Here are some of our favorite mountains for walking, or hiking, that will give you the panoramic views we’re all craving.

We’ll have to start with the highest peak in the northeast; Mount Washington’s peak in Gorham, NH stands at 6288 feet tall. Known as the “most dangerous small mountain in the world,” Mount Washington is not for the novice, or faint of heart. Nestled in the White Mountain National Forest, Mount Washington State Park has 24 hiking trails, views trails, and forest trails. The trails offer a range of expertise, but the hike to the top offers a panoramic view of New England and all the way to Canada. The park is open through to the end of the month, so make sure to plan your visit soon.

If you find yourself in Maine, Mount Katahdin is the state’s highest peak, and the summit is also the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. This hike runs along a knife’s edge trail, a unique feature for New England. The distance of the hike to the summit is 8.6 miles and quite strenuous, so only experienced hikers should attempt it.

For those with less experience but who still want fantastic panoramic views, Cadillac Mountain in Maine’s Acadia National Park is less challenging, but those who reach the top are amongst the first to see the sunrise in the U.S. each morning, as well as 360 degree views of the surrounding oceans and lakes. This mountain is also drivable, for those who aren’t up for the climb.

This crisp autumn weather won’t last for long, so make sure to plan your hiking trip soon. With a fleet of vehicles that have been fully equipped to protect passengers against the spread of COVID-19, GO Boston is readily equipped to get you and your party there safely and comfortably.
