Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States, and it commemorates all of those who have died serving in the United States Armed Forces. It’s a beautiful day and there are plenty of ways to spend it. We’ve pulled together some of the best activities around New England, so check out our Memorial Day guide!
Memorial Day this year falls on May 27th, and it typically marks the beginning of summer for many — so New Englanders hit the coast. There are plenty of beaches near the city where you can kick back, relax, and play in the sand and surf. Pack a picnic, towels, sun screen, and a boogie board! Some of our favorites are Crane Beach in Ipswich, Good Harbor in Gloucester, and, of course, Cape Cod and Nantucket. But make sure you get there early, as plenty of other New Englanders will surely be heading to the ocean too.
In honor of those who we’ve lost, there are plenty of Memorial Day services and concerts, especially in the Massachusetts Military Heroes Garden of Flags. Each year, 37,000 flags are planted in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Boston Common for every service member who has given their lives to American freedom since the Revolutionary War. The flag planting starts at May 22nd at 1pm, and will be there until sundown on Memorial Day.
The Annual Memorial Day services will also be held on Saturday, May 25th, at 11am at the Veterans Memorial Park. Located in the Back Bay Fens near Fenway Park, this service, which marks the 73rd annual one, is a beautifully moving commemoration.
Besides from the above, there are Red Sox games, the Boston Calling Music Festival, and many many more things to do. Whatever your plans are, you can rely on GO Boston to get you there safely and comfortably. Contact us soon to find out how we can make your Memorial Weekend a memorable one.
