Ever wondered about those curtained-off zones that airline hosts and hostesses walk in and out of on wide-bodied airplanes?
Recently, CNN dived into the hidden spaces on planes that passengers never see — Crew Rest Compartments. These compartments are, as in the title, areas where crew can take breaks throughout the flight. On newer airplanes like Boeing 787s or Airbus A350s, these compartments are above the main cabin, but in older aircrafts they could be in the cargo hold or main cabin.
There’s often one for the pilots (which typically sits above or near the cockpit) that includes two bunks and a recliner seat. A second one, for cabin crew, contains more bunks.
The hidden compartments are typically similar to a capsule hotel. There are also restrictions set by the Federal Aviation Administration that mandate that the areas must allow for peaceful sleep, and should have little intrusive noise, odors or vibrations.
